“Act One: An Autobiography”

This memoir by playwright and director Moss Hart is about turning his life and work into a play that shows how this man’s story continues to inspire. In this list, we take a look at the magic of Broadway and how that magic happens, as well as some of the best and worst moments in the history of theater.

This is the perfect book about Moss Hart, who was born to poor immigrant parents, grew up in New York and made a name for himself over the years.

Hart wrote the screenplay for “The Gentleman’s Agreement,” which won the Oscar for best film, as well as for “Born a Star” and “Can’t Take It All In.” This literary masterpiece is more textbook than easy to read, but it offers an insight into Hart’s life as an actor who has studied for numerous roles in productions, some of which are briefly described here. It’s a great resource for those of us who are interested in studying actors, studying where and when we need them and what to do.

“Broadway Swings: Covering the Ensemble in Musical Theatre” (2015)

It offers insights into how to do your job successfully, and provides time to reflect on your time on stage, as well as a look back at some of the most memorable moments of your career.

“Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years” (2019)

Julie Andrews shaped many of my childhood memories by playing Mary Poppins in the original Broadway production. Working with her daughter on an autobiography, Andrews describes the popular and difficult Broadway productions she took part in. Although we are perhaps best known for Mary, Poppy and Mary (and although she is best known as “Mary” in Mary), her Broadway experience is woven into some of her more famous roles, including the roles she played on stage. It gives an insight into the essential roles that go beyond the surface to see what makes a production tick.

Andrews was able to regain her voice when she wrote this book, but the heartbreaking operation that cost her beautiful voice to the world seemed to have happened for a reason.

“Wicked: The Grimmerie, a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Hit Broadway Musical” (2005)

Wicked is surely one of the best-selling musicals of all time, and if you’re not convinced yet, check out this book. This comprehensive novel covers everything Wicked fans love about the show, from the musical that pulls back the emerald curtain on the supposedly evil witches, to the incredible cast of characters and the amazing music and lyrics, everything a Wicked fan loves about the show.
